Fuel

Let's talk about fuel. It's expensive these days, especially gasoline. And since people are moving their homes further and further away from where they work, travel is a necessary part of our daily lives. There's lots of talk (ex: National Geographic) about alternative energy sources, which are most effective, when they would become economically feasible for the general public...very good conversations. If we get rid of our need for foreign oil, we might even reduce our need for foreign wars. And reducing CO2 emissions will curb ozone depletion, polar ice caps melting, and might even prevent a couple horrifying natural disasters. So here's my suggestion for an alternative energy source:

FOOD! Eat food and get around. How? Ride a bike. Walk. Using your own body as a vehicle has plenty of environmental, economic, spiritual, and health benefits. You may find yourself doing strange things like buying from local businesses instead of driving to the mall, eating food with more protein instead of carbs and sugar, talking to your neighbors, and enjoying the outdoors. Food also fuels entertainment. You can spend an evening on your porch instead of in front of the TV, play checkers or freeze tag, all with no electric bill or expensive equipment. Food is also a great holiday gift. Buy your loved one a cheese wheel for Christmas! Or better yet, feed someone in poverty in your loved one's honor through Heifer International. Before you know it, you'll find yourself wondering: Why don't we have bike lanes on our roads? Why do we zone suburbs purely residential and force car use? Why are megastores and one stop shopping so popular? Why was I always rushing instead of enjoying the ride? Why did I always think the fun was "somewhere else" when it's really wrapped up in adoration and joy? Why did I pay those gas prices for so long? That's what I think every day. Try it out! Reduce our dependence on foreign oil! Eat food.
